China Reaffirms India’s Support of One-China Policy

(MENAFN) China on Thursday reaffirmed that India remains "committed to the one-China policy," following talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi.

During the meeting, Jaishankar reiterated India's position, stating that the country remains steadfast in its support of the one-China policy and that Taiwan is considered part of China's territory, according to a statement from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning at a press briefing in Beijing.

Wang Yi concluded his two-day visit to India this week, where he held discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Jaishankar.

A Chinese readout of Wang's interactions with Jaishankar and Doval emphasized that India reaffirmed its long-standing stance on Taiwan, with statements asserting that "Taiwan is part of China" and that "India has consistently upheld the one-China policy." However, the Indian government did not include any references to Taiwan in its official readout following the talks.

In contrast, reports citing unnamed Indian government sources suggested that New Delhi conveyed to Beijing its intention to maintain a relationship with Taiwan that is centered on economic, technological, and cultural exchanges, similar to that of other countries.

Taiwan, which China considers a "breakaway province," has three offices in India. The island has operated independently since 1949, despite Beijing's claims of sovereignty.

Responding to media reports on India's clarification, Mao Ning expressed surprise, stating, "We're surprised at India's clarification." She further added that "it seems that some in India [are] trying to undermine China's sovereignty on the Taiwan question and handicap the improvement of China-India relations," voicing "grave concern" over the matter.
